10 best practices to promote a healthy pregnancy

Health & Nutrition Updates

Promoting a healthy pregnancy is essential for the well-being mother and baby. According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, certain lifestyle choices can support a healthy pregnancy and promote the growth and development of a strong baby.

10 ways to promote a healthy pregnancy through Ayurvedic lifestyle choices:

  1. Prioritize self-care. Take care of yourself - physically and emotionally. This includes getting enough rest (rejuvenation), practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation, and taking time to engage in activities that bring you joy.

  2. Eat a balanced diet. Creating a well-balanced food and drink intake is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Eat foods that are easy to digest and nourishing to the body. This includes cooked, warm, and well-seasoned foods, and avoiding raw foods and cold foods.

  3. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Drinking herbal teas, such as ginger tea, can help support digestion and reduce morning sickness. (Do remember teas are dehydrating. Drink pure water before and after tea.)

  4. Practice yoga and exercise. Yoga and exercise can help to promote overall health and well-being during pregnancy. Gentle yoga poses and breathing exercises can help to strengthen the body, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and gain familiarity with birthing positions.

  5. Get enough rest. Getting enough sleep is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Cultivate an evening routine to go to bed early and wake up early; as this is the time when the body is naturally inclined to rest and rejuvenate.

  6. Avoid harmful substances. It is important to avoid harmful substances during pregnancy, such as alcohol and tobacco. Avoid certain foods that can be difficult to digest, such as spicy and fried foods.

  7. Practice stress-reducing techniques. Stress can have a negative impact on pregnancy, so it is important to find ways to reduce stress. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and aromatherapy can help reduce stress.

  8. Spend time in nature. Spending time in nature can be beneficial for mother and baby. Take walks in outside, as this can help to reduce stress and promote overall health and well-being.

  9. Listen to music. Listening to music is a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation during pregnancy. Consider soothing music, such as classical music or mantras, to help create a calm and peaceful environment. Make sure it's music which brings you joy.

  10. Seek guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner. An Ayurvedic practitioner can provide personalized guidance on how to promote a healthy pregnancy, including dietary and lifestyle recommendations that are specific to your individual needs.

Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth, with emphasis on self-care, balanced diet, hydration, exercise and stress-reducing techniques, and avoiding harmful substances.

By incorporating these lifestyle tips into your pregnancy, you can help to promote a healthier pregnancy and ensure the growth and development of baby.
